Buhari to depart Nigeria for Mali on peace mission

Following his meeting with the ECOWAS Special Envoy, and former President Goodluck Jonathan, President Muhammadu Buhari will Thursday depart for Bamako, the capital of Mali on a one-day visit.This was contained in a statement signed by his Spokesman, Femi Adesina on Wednesday.

The statement added that Buhari and some ECOWAS leaders led by the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the sub-regional organisation, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali.The purpose of the meeting is to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.Also expected at the meeting are the host President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali, and his counterpart from Senegal, Machy Sall.Others, according to the statement are, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire.

Jonathan was at the State House, Abuja, on Monday in the company of ECOWAS Commission President, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou.In the meeting, they resolved that Buhari will discuss with leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the crisis rocking Mali.
